UC hid $175 million from the public eye and from their own governing board, even as they raised tuition on California students.

(Sacramento) – After the state auditor uncovered $175 million reserve held by the administration of the University of California, Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (Orange County), Members of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Finance, the Assembly Higher Education Committee and the Joint Legislative Audit Committee participated in a joint hearing to discuss the recent state audit of the University of California (UC) Office of the President titled, “The University of California Office of the President: It Failed to Disclose Tens of Millions in Surplus Funds, and Its Budget Practices are Misleading.”

Sacramento, CA – Assembly Bill (AB) 363 by Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva (D-Orange County) successfully passed the Assembly Committee on Veteran Affairs with a bipartisan and unanimous vote. The bill would waive the processing fee for homeless and low-income veterans who apply for a veteran designation on their California driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Current law requires the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to offer a driver's license or identification card printed with the word "veteran" on it, indicating that the possessor is a military veteran. However, all veterans are currently charged a fee for this service, a cost that homeless veterans may not be able to afford. Assembly Bill 363 will waive the fee for low-income and homeless veterans that do not have the extra resources readily available to pay for the veteran designation.

(SACRAMENTO) – Today, the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy approved Assembly Bill 162 (AB162) by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Orange County) and Assemblymember Sabrina Cervantes (D-Corona) by a bipartisan vote of 7-0. AB 162 would make more small businesses eligible for the California Competes tax cut administered by the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). The tax cut is available to establish a business, or stay and grow an existing business, in California.

 â€œAs the Chair of the Jobs Committee, I know how important the California Competes Tax Credit is for employers,” Assemblymember Quirk-Silva said. “Small businesses are critical to the strength of local economies and communities. They provide opportunities to people with entrepreneurial spirits and the will to work hard, and are the cornerstone of the American Dream.”

One of Orange County’s Academic Leaders Passes Away at 81

SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk Silva (D-Orange County) and the California State Legislature adjourned in the memory of Dr. Milton Gordon, Cal State Fullerton's fourth president, who led the University into prominence as one of the nation’s most inclusive senior institutions of higher learning.
