(Sacramento) â Today, on the floor of the State Assembly, Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva paid a special tribute to the thousands of law enforcement officials across this state in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
âThese brave men and women work loyally on behalf of all Californians, regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves,â said Quirk-Silva. âThrough the enforcement of our laws, these same officers have safeguarded the lives and property of the citizens of California and have pledged so much to ensure our right to be free from crime and violence.â
âWe are indebted to our California peace officers every day. Californians across the state express appreciation of the sacrifice and dedication to those individuals who gave their lives for our safety on Peace Officersâ Memorial Day. This year, we recognize 10 officers that lost their lives in the line of duty.â
Joining Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva in attendance today was Buena Park City Councilmember Art Brown, who is a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff, and in 1976 was part of the California Peace Officerâs Commission to dedicate the memorial. Art Brown has an impressive career in public service, which includes service in the United States Navy, Air Force, and Marines.
In 1962, President Kennedy signed legislation that each year states must honor those peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty by lowering flags to half-mast in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
