Assemblywoman’s Budget Request Benefits Higher Education

ORANGE COUNTY – June 27, 2019, Governor Gavin Newson signed California’s 2019-2020 Budget.  The budget will increase its spending on public education, expand healthcare services and stash away more money than ever for an economic downturn under the state.

The $214.8 Billion budget is the largest in state history. The majority of its provisions take effect next week, though some new services will not be funded until January in an effort to lower the short-term cost.

With the Budget officially signed Orange County will be receiving a number of major budget approvals including the following requested by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton).

Fullerton’s Hunt Branch Library received $2,500,000 for building renovations.

Cal Grant Programs and Awards received $40,000,000 For an additional 11,000 new competitive Cal Grant awards, UC to waive summer tuition and fees for students eligible to receive state financial aid (this program will be suspended in 2021-22), and for CSU to waive summer tuition and fees for students eligible to receive state financial aid (this program will be suspended in 2021-22).

Fullerton Community College received $14,056,000 for building modernizations to assist their students.

“I am excited to announce that the following budget requests in the General Fund allocation were provided for the following district projects,” said Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva. “I am pleased to bring vital resources back to our community.”

Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva Assists Students to Receive Scholarships

ORANGE COUNTY – Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D – Fullerton) is proud to acknowledge two recipients of this CLLCF scholarship. Luis Antonio Estrada Rivera and Stephanie Nguyen both from Buena Park were each selected as scholarship recipients.  Luis Antonio Estrada Rivera will be attending UC Merced this upcoming fall and Stephanie Nguyen will be attending UC Santa Barbara.

The California Latino Legislative Caucus Foundation (CLLCF) announced today 50 students from across the state who have been selected to receive a 2019 CLLCF Scholarship, which aids eligible students admitted to or currently enrolled at an accredited college or university.

“I am excited to see the enthusiasm in higher education by the youth in our district,” said Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva.  “I am hopeful for the future of our district and know that these two recipients are well deserving of these scholarships.”

OC Veteran’s Cemetery Bill Approved by Senate Veterans Affairs Committee

SACRAMENTO, CA – The State Senate Veterans Affairs Committee voted 5-0 on June 25 to approve Assembly Bill (AB) 368 by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D – Fullerton). AB 368 designates the ARDA site in the Orange County Great Park as the location for a Southern California Veteran’s Memorial Park & Cemetery.

“It is clear that an Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery is essential, as many veterans and their family’s needs are not being met by the existing Veteran’s Cemeteries,” said Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva. “We need a site for the Southern California Veteran’s Cemetery that will serve and recognize the many Californians who made great sacrifices for this nation.”
