ASSEMBLYWOMAN QUIRK-SILVA PARTICIPATES IN RISING TIDE SUMMIT

SACRAMENTO - Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton), participated in the Rising Tide Summit hosted by Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon.  Due to her commitment and work on the homelessness crisis, she was one of five panelists to lead the discussion How We Look at Homelessness: A New Lens.

Rising Tide: A Summit on Economic Security, is a two-day summit which features some of the top creative minds from across the world.  The Speaker convened this summit to address the urgent and dire policy need of our time: economic insecurity.

Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva said, “Today's summit panel displayed vast knowledge, experience, and unwavering passion; all of which are essential to address the crisis, together."

The panels examined the demographics of the homeless population today, and what it means for providing services to address this critical problem.  Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva was joined by fellow panelists including Mr. Nan Roman, President and CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness; Stephen Peck, who heads U.S. VETS which provides housing to more than 5,000 veterans; Cyndi Tseng, who works with the homeless in Taipei, which has the largest homeless population in Taiwan; as well as Assemblymember Richard Bloom.

"Too many of our fellow Californians simply cannot afford life’s basic needs.  The Rising Tide Summit will bring to us, here in the Capitol, speakers and participants who have had success addressing economic insecurity as government leaders, innovators in social service, and leading executives," said Speaker Rendon.  "From their experiences, they have created worldviews that they will share and from which we can develop new policy models."

"Homelessness is a complex and multi-level issue.  We must focus on long-term permanent housing combined with a wrap-around service model that also addresses the individual's health care, socio-economic, and mental health needs," said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva. “I am looking forward to continue to work on bringing solutions to our homelessness crisis as we move forward this year.”
