(Sacramento) â Cinco de Mayo is a very significant date in the history of California and Mexico. In recognition of that date when the Mexican people defeated a better trained and equipped army at the âBatalla de Pueblaâ the State Assembly passed House Resolution 17, authored by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Orange County), which declares May 1st to May 5th as Cinco de Mayo week. âCinco de Mayo serves to remind us that the foundation of any nation and our state is its people,â said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva. âWe honor their spirit and courage in the face of adversity, their strength and drive to achieve self-determination, and their willingness to sacrifice even life itself in the pursuit of freedom and liberty.â Hereâs more in this Assembly Access video.
