Donât Let the Violence Against Women Act Expire!
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says one in three women encounter sexual violence during their lifetime. Help prevent an important anti-violence law from disappearing, and petition Congress to take action NOW to bring a reauthorization of the âViolence Against Women Actâ (VAWA) before it expires on December 7, 2018.
Since 1994, VAWA has helped to protect and support millions of Americans who have faced domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. To date, VAWA has:
- Increased criminal penalties.
- Provided grants to address rape, sexual assault, domestic abuse and other gender-related violence.
- Provided grants for law enforcement training and violence prevention efforts.
VAWA has dramatically improved our nationâs response to these crimes, and has contributed to the overall declining rates of domestic abuse since its enactment. However, instances of violence are still very common.
This is a bipartisan issue that affects everyone, and we must act now to avoid any lapse in critical services. VAWA remain in jeopardy, and Congress has only a couple months to negotiate a proper reauthorizationâ¦or allow it to lapse.
Please join me to tell Congress to TAKE ACTION NOW, and not roll back VAWA protections!
