As the proud author of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 109, I led the effort for the California State Assembly to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Providing students with tools and materials that encourage them to say no to drugs reinforces our commitment to the future of a healthy California. My office has certificates and bookmarks available for this effort, and we are standing by to help with resources for anyone interested in participating.
Red Ribbon Week is an important program that educates grade school students to the dangers of substance abuse, both legal and illegal substances, and the damage it can cause to themselves, as well as to their families and friends. It is so important that we encourage kids at an early age to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 when United States Drug Enforcement Agency Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico City. Since then the red ribbon became a symbol for living a drug-free lifestyle.
This year, Red Ribbon Week takes place from Oct. 23 to Oct. 31. There will be activities in schools and communities throughout Orange County.
