SACRAMENTO, CA –Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D – Fullerton), a teacher for over 30 years, successfully secured $15 million in this year’s budget to increase the number of teachers trained and authorized to provide computer science instruction to California students.
"The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for teachers that are trained in computer science education. Throughout the nation, the transition to remote learning was abrupt and immediate and technology-related challenges posed a significant barrier to our students’ education," said Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva.
The $15 million Computer Science Access Initiative awards grants to support and encourage the preparation of credentialed teachers to earn a supplementary authorization in computer science and provide instruction in computer science coursework. Grants will be prioritized for teachers who work in school districts serving a higher proportion of low-income and underserved students.
"The need for computer science as part of primary education for all students is paramount," said Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva. "California's prosperity has been built upon a diverse and accomplished workforce, and despite a booming tech sector, California's high schools offer few of these courses. The Computer Science Access Initiative funding sends a strong message that the state is serious about investing in computer science education for our students."
