FULLERTON, CA – Governor Gavin Newsom announced his plans to re-open the Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa as part of California’s plan to build surge capacity to combat the Coronavirus outbreak.
Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton) voiced her support of the strategy, stating, “The Coronavirus has created a collection of appalling and troubling images not only in California, but around the world,” said Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva. “While many individuals are suffering without adequate medical services, our State has been persistent in preparation to meet the challenges ahead. The Fairview Developmental Center will provide necessary space in Orange County for our first responders and front line doctors to save lives.”
The Fairview Developmental Center provides Orange County up to 1,100 hospital beds for non-acute patients, enabling Orange County to treat our most critical Coronavirus patients. The facility in Costa Mesa is anticipated to be functioning by late April.
The California Department of Health and Human Services will be leading this effort, in partnership with California Office of Emergency Services (Cal-OES), FEMA, the Orange County Health Agency and the City of Costa Mesa.
Across the world, hospitals are more impacted and dramatically insufficient for the sheer growth of the number of their patients. We must add 50,000 new hospital beds in the next six weeks – an inconceivable increase of nearly 70% in order to meet the upcoming challenges. The strategy by the Governor will allow us to re-open closed hospitals such as Fairview Developmental Center to serve our residents and save lives
