Quirk-Silva works for Key State Rental Stability Agreement

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton) voted in support on AB 1482 in the Housing and Community Development Committee.

“Although, I supported this bill to move out of the Housing Committee, because we need to utilize several approaches to solve our housing crisis, and rent stabilization is one of our options; I would reserve my vote as a no vote, if there is not language that would provide more stability for renters and owners alike,” said Sharon Quirk-Silva.

Assembly Bill 1482 (AB 1482), would prevent owners from rent gauging.  Recently in Quirk-Silva’s 65th District individuals of the Rancho La Paz residence were afflicted by a 300% increase of their rent.  AB 1482 will attempt to prevent the raising of rents more than five percent (5%) plus CPI a year after inflation.  The bill has advanced and now moves on to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

â€œWhat this cap does is protect the most egregious increases in rent,” said Assemblyman David Chiu.

In supporting the bill, Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva asked that Chiu to add language to make sure that the rent cap remains consistent in future years. Ultimately, this bill will affect owners and renters in our district and it is vital that we ensure stability for all parties.
