Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva Sees Progress in Budget Passage, but Urges Greater funding for Orange County and for Higher Education

For immediate release:

Legislature passes on-time budget for seventh consecutive year

SACRAMENTO –The California State Assembly passed its 2017-2018 budget bill today with a 59-20-1 vote. Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva (D – Orange County) issued the following statement after the vote:

“This on-time, balanced budget exemplifies fiscal restraint, strengthens the state’s rainy day fund, increases public oversight, and makes targeted investments in our communities,” said Quirk-Silva. “For instance, it brings opportunities and much needed resources to working families with the Earned Income Tax Credit Expansion.”

“Most importantly, the budget shows a reinvestment and commitment to Orange County, by supporting the Orange County Veterans Cemetery, the West Coyote Hills Open Space Project, the funding a pilot program to help enforce local regulations to protect property values, and more.”

“The budget is a reflection of the values and priorities of our community, but we must continue to do more for the people of Orange County.”

“As a teacher for over 30 years, I know that the investments made in education will help Californians find the opportunities they deserve. I applaud the modest funding increases included in the budget for K-12 schools, as well as higher education,” said Quirk-Silva. “I applaud maintaining the Middle Class Scholarship, and enacting the Degrees Not Debt program, but we need to continue improving education. We need to reduce the number of Californians living in poverty, and improve their quality of life.”
