Today, I stand with the incredible women leaders of the California Legislative Women's Caucus and joined by our female Constitutional Officers to take a photo in solidarity for the Suffrage Centennial!
I am proud to celebrate the continued growth of Latina leadership in California. Today, my colleagues and I welcomed Nury Martinez, the first Latina President Pro Tempore of the LA City Council, to the capitol.
Today we honor the memory of the millions of individuals – the mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, friends and neighbors – who lost their lives during a time of unparalleled inhumanity and cruelty on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
We reaffirm our ongoing accountability as citizens and as a nation to live out the admonition, “Never forget. Never again.”
Thank you for visiting me in the State Capitol, City of Buena Park Delegation. It’s nice to take time during a busy committee schedule to see our friends and hear about the great work being done in our district! Keep up the great work City of Buena Park - City Hall.
Sunny Youngsun Park, City Council Member and the Buena Park delegation of Chief Corey Sianez, Buena Park Police Department, Jim Vanderpool, Buena Park City Manager, and Adria Jimenez, Buena Park City Clerk were attending the League of California Cities Conference in Sacramento.
“Decisions to change admissions requirements need to be vetted fully, including collaboration and transparency, as well as, through studies, that would determine any impact it may have on students,” said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva. “We must identify how any decision will disproportionally effect students of color; creating additional barriers to a student’s education.”
Assembly Bill 1930 requires that any change in student eligibility policy requirements, the CSU and UC must coordinate to try to align their respective student eligibility policies so that there are a common set of clear state public university requirements for public school students. Additionally, an independent, third-party research organization must be commissioned to assess whether the change in student eligibility policy would have a disparate impact on rates of graduates in public secondary schools, who are members of underrepresented student groups.
"As a teacher for over 30 years, I have seen how decisions can disproportionally affect one group of students over another,” said Assemblywoman Quirk-Silva. “We do not want to add to a K-12 system, where disparities in college readiness already exist.”
I was happy to stand with Korean Consulate General in Los Angeles, Kim Wan-Joong, at a reception held prior to the Assembly Floor Session.
During the Assembly Floor Session, I was proud to Joint Author Assembly Concurrent Resolution 142 which proclaims January 13, 2020, as Korean American Day. The resolution passed unanimously. This is an important effort to honor the history, contributions, and sacrifices of California's Korean-Americans.
Our office hosted Operation Gobble today. This Annual Turkey Dinner Giveaway is our effort to help fight hunger in Orange County! We couldn’t have been successful without the help of our partners at Golden State Water Company and the City of La Palma, for providing the turkeys as well as the venue.
